“The nine policemen, including two inspectors, were accused of manhandling a 50-year-old Dalit woman called Basmati in Balrampur district. Her son was wanted in a case of looting, registered at a police station in Siddharthnagar district,” Rakesh Shanker, additional superintendent of police of Siddharthnagar, told IANS over telephone.

The policemen went to Basmati’s house in Balrampur’s Bangai village Feb 6 to nab her son Indreshwar. But when they did not find Indreshwar, the policemen allegedly beat up the Dalit woman and she died in a hospital Feb 8, Shanker added.

All the suspended policemen are of the Itwa police station in Siddharthnagar district where the case against Indreshwar was registered Jan 25. Siddharthnagar is some 300 km from here.

After Basmati’s death, her husband ShayamLal registered a case against the nine policemen at Jarwan police station in Balrampur, around 200 km from Lucknow.

“Police of both the districts are investigating the case against the nine policemen,” said Balrampur additional superintendent of police Rajesh Kumar.
