Menon to arrive in Nepal for talks with Maoist government

By IANS,

Kathmandu : Three months after he had accompanied Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to Nepal, India’s Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon is arriving in Kathmandu Tuesday on a two-day visit.

The Indian envoy is scheduled to hold talks with Nepal’s Maoist Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav and opposition leader and former premier Girija Prasad Koirala.

Many of the key issues discussed between Mukherjee and Prachanda during the former’s visit to Nepal in November still remain inconclusive.

There are growing allegations of Indian encroachment on Nepali territory. Though the Indian minister had said that most of the work on updating the India-Nepal boundary has been done, the new official boundary approved by both sides is yet to be unveiled.

India is keen to sign a revised extradition treaty with Nepal and that too has been in limbo.

There is growing unrest in the Terai plains along the India-Nepal border, which is of acute concern to India.
