New Delhi : The number of incidents of Maoist violence has been at more or less the same level for the past few years, the government informed parliament Tuesday.

Minister of state for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaisawal told the house that there were 1,591 incidents of Maoist violence in 2008 against 1,565 in 2007. At least 1,509 incidents were reported in 2006.

“However the level of violence in different (Maoist hit) states has fluctuated from time to time depending upon the counter measures taken by them,” Jaisawal said.

“In the recent past Maoist violence has been relatively concentrated in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Orissa,” he added.

The minister said the government has decided to establish 20 counter insurgency and anti-terrorism (CIAT) schools, mostly in areas affected by Maoist violence and insurgency.
