Tehran : An Iranian court has charged seven members of the outlawed Baha’i sect with espionage, IRNA reported Tuesday.
The accused committed criminal acts, including spying for foreigners, Iranian Judiciary spokesman Ali-Reza Jamshidi told reporters here.
Jamshidi said the accused can seek the help of defence lawyers during the hearings that will start within a week.
He said Iran’s Prosecutor General Qorban-Ali Dorri Najafabadi has sent a letter to the Information (Intelligence) Minister Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejeie about the activities of the followers of the Baha’i sect in the country.
“Any acts which could be taken as propaganda against Islam, Iran and its Islamic establishment is definitely considered a crime and its perpetrators would have to face legal actions,” Jamshidi said.
Earlier on Sunday, Iran’s Prosecutor General Dorri-Najafabadi said: “There is irrefutable evidence that adherents of the Baha’i sect are in close contact with the enemies of the Iranian nation.”
