Tehran : A bomb exploded Wednesday in a mosque in the Iranian city of Zahedan, the police said.
The police were quoted by semi-official news agency Fars as saying that no casualties were reported and only some damage took place in the explosion in Zahedan’s Al-Ghadir mosque.
Zahedan is the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan province, a volatile region close to the Pakistani border.
According to initial reports, an unidentified man who arrived on a motorcycle failed to enter the mosque and and kept the explosive in the kitchen, police officer Salah Asgharpour said. The bomb then went off and caused minor damage, he added.
In the past few years, Iran has been hit by a string of bomb attacks which the authorities blamed on a Sunni group called Jundallah, mostly in its southeastern provinces bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan.
