Five killed in Colombia military plane crash

By IANS,

Bogota : A Colombian military plane crashed Wednesday during a training mission in westcentral province of Caldas, killing all five people on board, officials said.

The so-called “ghost plane” – a retrofitted Douglas AC-47 – crashed in a rural area of the province and burst into flames upon impact, an air force spokesman said, EFE reported.

Col. Arturo Bernal, of Caldas’ Civil Defence Agency, told reporters that an air force helicopter had arrived at the site of the accident, an area known as Garino near the town of La Dorada.

The cause of the crash was not yet known.

The plane belonged to the air force’s German Olano Base in Puerto Salgar, a town near La Dorada.

Authorities have not yet identified the individuals killed in the crash, all of them members of the air force.

“Ghost planes” are used for reconnaissance flights in the military’s battle against drug trafficking and leftist rebels.
