Election Commission to hold series of preparatory meets

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Election Commission will hold a series of meetings in the coming weeks before announcing the dates for the Lok Sabha polls.

Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami and Election Commissioners Navin Chawla and S.Y. Quraishi will assess the law and order situation in the country, sources said.

The Commission is also tipped to meet Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta. One of the key issues that would be taken up in the meeting would be the availability of the paramilitary forces to ensure that the Lok Sabha polls, due by May, are held in a free atmosphere.

“Series of meetings are scheduled from this week onwards before the Commission decides on the dates for the Lok Sabha elections,” a poll panel source said Sunday.

Earlier this month, the Commission met leaders of the various political parties. It also held a review meeting with the chief electoral officers of all states and union territories. Issues related to electoral roll revisions and the status of photo electoral rolls were discussed.
