Mohali (Punjab) : In a major surgical operation, two French surgeons successfully replaced a hip joint of a British patient at a private hospital in this north Indian town adjoining Chandigarh Sunday.
Indian doctor Manuj Wadhwa, a senior consultant of orthopaedics at Fortis Hospital, also participated in the surgery that was shown live on TV to a select band of people, inlcuding the media.
The surgery was successfully conducted on the British national, Rosa Kucharskyj, by French surgeons Francois Chalenon and Remi Philippot. It was part of an advancement workshop on hip replacement techniques conducted in Fortis Hospital.
Rosa, 57, was staying in Patiala town of Punjab, about 50 km from here. She has been in India for the last few months on a business assignment.
“In the surgery, we have replaced the hip joint with a corail hip and pinnacle cup with metal on metal bearing. The corail hip is designed to preserve the existing bone while stimulating new bone formation around the implant,” Chalenon told IANS after the surgery.
This technique reduces pain and recovery time and patient can easily return to his daily routine, he added.
“The patient can live a normal life like any other individual as he can play football, cricket, go for swimming, lift weights and easily climb stairs which is not possible in simple technique of hip replacement,” pointed out Chalenon.
Philippot said: “This is a very less complicated surgical technique where we require only three to five inch incision whereas in conventional surgery we require 10 to 12 inch incision. Time duration of this surgery is only one-hour and patient recovers very quickly and starts walking on his feet in the next 24-hours.”
However, the surgery on Rosa took nearly two-and-a-half-hour as it was being shown live to the media and participants of the workshop.
Manuj Wadhwa said that the patient had joint pains for a long time. “Initially, she consulted doctors in the UK and finally resorted to an economical and world-class treatment available here.”
“This technique of joint replacement costs around Rs.150,000 that is more than the conventional way of operating but it is at least 30 times lesser than Europe and America,” said Wadhwa.
