Toronto : A floating “car” was among an unprecedented number of sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) reported in Canada last year.
At least 1,004 UFOs were sighted across the country last year, representing an almost 25 percent increase in UFO sightings since 2007 and the highest number in almost two decades, Ufology Research, an institute in Winnipeg, said in its report released last weekend.
“This is unprecedented. We were amazed to discover these many UFO sightings had been reported in 2008. It’s astonishing to me that we had such a dramatic increase,” said Ufology Research spokesman Chris Rutkowski.
“It could be an indication that there is actually something up there seen in greater numbers than ever before, it could be that there are perhaps more military flights, it could be that people are more able to access websites where they can report the UFOs,” he added.
Among the bizarre sightings reported by Canadians was information about a car-like object flying just above the ground in the province of Saskatchewan. Those who saw the object said it never touched the ground.
Rutkowski – who is a trained astronomer – said most of the photos and videos of UFOs posted on websites were just stars or aircraft, not alien objects.
However, up to 10 percent of all sightings could not be explained by any laws of astronomy, he said.
“It’s not something that is necessarily out of this world, it could be something from this world but at this point we simply don’t know,” said Rutkowski.
