Markets slip at opening bell

Mumbai : Indian equities fell at the opening bell Tuesday with a key index starting trade lower than its last closing figure.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensitive Index (Sensex) opened at 8,707.35 points, lower than its 8,843.21 point close Friday. About 10 minutes into trade, it was at 8,658.51 points, 2.09 percent or 184.70 points lower than its previous close.

At the same time, the S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was at 2,689.7 points, 1.71 percent down from its last close of 2,736.45.

The BSE midcap index was 2.04 percent lower, while the BSE smallcap index was down 1.4 percent.

Overnight, a key index of the New York Stock Exchange had closed at a 12-year low.
