Agartala : India put its eastern borders on high alert Wednesday after a mutiny by the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) left many people dead and several injured, an official said.
Senior officials of the Border Security Force (BSF) rushed to the frontier along Bangladesh, BSF spokesman A.K. Singh said.
“We have sensitised all border outposts along the Indo-Bangla border and asked all battalion commanders to supervise the security measures,” Singh said.
Heavy clashes between the BDR personnel and the army erupted at the paramilitary BDR headquarters in Dhaka Wednesday morning. The mutiny was apparently over frequent transfers and poor salaries.
“The BSF is monitoring the situation (in Dhaka) very closely,” Singh told IANS. “We have asked the BSF to maintain a strict vigil along the border with Bangladesh.”
India shares a 4,095-km border with Bangladesh, including 2,216 km of it in West Bengal.
