Dhaka : The mobile network in Bangladesh, except in parts of capital city Dhaka has been suspended due to the crisis following Wednesday’s mutiny by troopers of paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) against their army officers.
A senior official of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that they have asked the country’s cellphone operators to disconnect mobile communications until further orders, following a government direction.
The mobile communications between Dhaka and other districts have been cut while mobile connections are also cut in some parts in Dhaka city, said Fazlur Rahman, President of Association of Mobile Telecom operators in Bangladesh.
The rebel troopers, who started the disarmament process early Thursday, said they are ready to surrender their arms by 2 p.m. Thursday (0800 GMT) if army officials are withdrawn from all the BDR posts across the country.
However, the soldiers inside the BDR headquarters, where they staged revolt Wednesday, started to open fire again at noon Thursday.
The situation is still unclear as reports said trouble broke out at BDR camps where gunshots were heard across the country Thursday morning.
The BDR soldiers, whose primary task is to guard the Bangladesh border, staged the revolt at their headquarters Wednesday morning to press for their demands concerning their salary and other benefits.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday afternoon during talks with a 14-member rebel delegation granted general amnesty to the troopers.
