Chennai : External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee will Saturday lay the foundation stone for Neyveli Lignite Corp’s (NLC) 1,000-MW thermal power plant in Tuticorin.

“The Rs.59-billion (Rs.5,900 crore) project has a couple of special features like the reverse osmosis desalination plant, gas insulation switchyard and pile foundation apart from NLC’s first venture into power generation with coal,” NLC chairman and managing director A.R. Ansari told IANS from Tuticorin on phone.

The power project will be owned by NLC Tamil Nadu Power Ltd, an 89:11 joint venture between NLC and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).

Coal for the project will be imported from Indonesia, and the Tuticorin Port Trust (TPT) will build a dedicated jetty for the purpose.

According to Ansari, state-run power equipment major Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has bagged the boiler turbine generator (BTG) order from NLC.
