President Zardari Committed To Tangible Change

Islamabad : Despite the internal and external challenges facing Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari is committed to elimination of terrorism and extremism, strengthening of federation and bringing about a tangible socio-economic change in the country, Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported.

When President Zardari took reign of the country’s affairs on September 9 last year as a democratic head of state, Pakistan was facing a difficult situation in the wake of terrorist attacks and a tense environment due to drone attacks in the tribal areas.

Besides, the country was also facing severe fiscal and economic challenges including the fast depleting foreign exchange reserves, inflation at 25 percent, 40 percent reduction in stock market capital, capital flight, decrease in foreign investment and loadshedding.

According to a PTV report which reflected an overview of the first 100 days of President Asif Ali Zardari, the main issue was to take the international community into confidence about Pakistan’s efforts in the global fight against terrorism.

President Zardari after the Mumbai terror attacks, did not let the situation to deteriorate by adopting a policy of understanding, conciliation and strength.

The President, through contacts with the world leaders, presented Pakistan’s just view-point and made it clear that Pakistan being a responsible country will abide by the principles of international community in the global fight against terrorism, the report said.

President Zardari during his first address to the joint sitting of parliament gave new direction to the future of masses.

“I have a dream for Pakistan. My dream is to free this great country from the shackles of poverty, hunger, terrorism and disunity. And I know that as law makers, you share this dream.

“As a democratically elected President of Pakistan, I call upon the parliament to form as all-parties committee to revisit the 17th Amendment and Article 58-2B”, the President said in his address to parliament.

President Zardari, who believes in a peaceful and effective diplomacy, remained successful in achieving important political and economic objectives during his recent visits to the United States, China, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Concept of the “Friends of Pakistan” meeting in New York was also presented by President Zardari, aimed at retrieving the country from economic crises, the television report said.

Negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were also aimed at improving the country’s balance of payment position and strengthening the foreign exchange reserves.

Owing to these talks, the IMF Board has approved a package of over US$7 billion for Pakistan, with first tranche already received by the government.

Though three months are not enough to judge the leadership qualities of any person, however, President Zardari through his political and administrative decisions and by adopting a democratic approach has proved that he will achieve the goal of development and prosperity.
