Gunpowder in van causes a scare at Delhi airport

By IANS,

New Delhi : Five people were detained at Delhi’s international airport Sunday after crackers and gunpowder were found in their vehicle. But they were let off after it came to be known that the men were innocent and that the stuff had been used for a film shooting.

Allauddin was on his way to the airport to fly to Qatar, accompanied by his friends Atif Ahmed, Ajmal Khan and Nihar Ahmed. They were in a Maruti van driven by Pankaj Chauhan.

All five were detained when Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel who checked the vehicle around 5 a.m. at the airport complex discovered 100 gm of gunpowder, crackers, handcuffs, electric wires, switches and battery clips in the car.

All five were taken into the custody and handed over to Delhi Police. The police soon uncovered the mystery.

“We found that the van was probably used for a documentary film shoot some days ago and the stuff was used for a shooting sequence. Since then it had all been lying in the van,” said a police officer.

“Various security agencies interrogated them at length and after verifying their antecedents we allowed them to go,” said the officer. All of them hailed from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Security has been tightened especially at the Delhi and Mumbai airports following intelligence inputs of possible terror strikes.
