Security tightened at West Bengal airport after threat mail

By IANS,

Siliguri : Security was stepped up Sunday at the Bagdogra airport here after authorities received a mail threatening to bomb it, an official said.

Bagdogra director Kalyan Kumar Bhowmik received a hand-written letter Saturday threatening to bomb the airport within the next seven days.

“Though it is not known who sent the mail, we have taken the matter seriously and stepped up security at the airport,” Additional Superintendent of Police Gaurav Sharma told reporters.

He said additional forces of the West Bengal police and Bagdogra anti-hijacking police team have been deployed inside and outside the airport. “Every vehicle, person and baggage is being manually checked by our men,” he added.

“The letter is written in Bengali and there is a mobile number of Ludhiana mentioned in it. We are investigating the matter and trying the track down the sender,” Sharma said.

Bagdogra airport is a military airport located at Siliguri in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district. It is also used by civilian flights, including those connecting Kolkata, New Delhi, Chennai and Guwahati.
