Bhopal : Rail traffic was disrupted on the busy Delhi-Chennai trunk route after a goods train derailed at a crossing at this Madhya Pradesh capital Sunday, officials said. No one was reported injured in the accident.
The mishap occurred Sunday afternoon at Habibganj railway station crossing when a goods train loaded with steel rolls – going from Bhilai in Chhattisgarh to Gobindgarh in Punjab – derailed, disrupting rail traffic on the Delhi-Chennai trunk route, said railway official K.K. Dubey.
“Though an inquiry by a team of high-level officials would reveal the exact cause of the accident, it prima facie appears that an axle of one of the wagons broke, leading to the mishap which has damaged the tracks and overhead power cables. However, no one was injured in the accident,” he said.
It will take nearly 24 hours to restore the rail traffic on the busy trunk lines, officials said.
The trains coming from Chennai are being diverted via Itarsi while those coming from Delhi are being diverted via Bina, the official added.
Trains whose running has been affected include Karnataka Express, Punjab Mail, Mangla Express, Kerala Express, Kamayani Express, Pushpak Express and Rapti-Sagar Express.
