By IANS,

Chennai : Over 30 Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) workers were arrested in various parts of Tamil Nadu late Saturday after over 40 buses were damaged in violent protests during the last three days, a police officer said.

“Arrests of those who attacked government buses are under way. Some of these people belong to the VCK. The numbers of detained suspects are bound to increase,” Director General of Police K.P. Jain told IANS.

“Stringent action has been ordered against all miscreants – whatever might be their political affiliations,” Jain added.

Seven buses have been burnt and some 40 damaged since Thursday in Cuddalore, Madurai and Villupuram districts. So far, no one has been hurt in the incidents.

VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan, who began his “indefinite” fast in support of Lankan Tamils had begun three days ago, told reporters here that he would decide on the future course of protest after consulting party workers Sunday.

State Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy, PMK founder leader S. Ramadoss and several Left leaders urged Thirumavalavan to call off the protest being undertaken by him along with hundreds of his supporters.

VCK is an ally of the ruling DMK.
