Bogota : A Colombian court allowed an inmate to wear a skirt and makeup in a men’s prison, acknowledging his freedom of personality, EFE has reported.
The decision of the Superior Court of the central city of Ibague Friday will allow Fairber Narvaez to dress like a woman and go by the name of “Mireya” in the jail near Chaparral.
“There are a lot of homosexuals here, but they haven’t dared to come out of the closet,” Narvaez said upon hearing the decision. “I did it and now they don’t see me as a clown – they respect me.”
During the eight years he belonged to the militia, he kept secret the fact that he was gay, but when he was captured and sentenced for the crime of conspiracy to commit crime and attempted homicide he decided to make his sexual orientation public.
The court under Judge Alirio Sedano acknowledged Narvaez’s right to freedom of personality and ordered prison warden Ivan Hernandez to allow him to dress like a woman and wear makeup.
