Washington : Barack Obama will Tuesday become the country’s 44th president and its first African-American to live in the White House. Here are details of his life:

– Born Aug 4, 1961 in Hawaii, to a US mother and a Kenyan father.
– Spent childhood in Hawaii and in Indonesia (1967-70).
– 1983: Graduated from Colombia University in New York with a degree in Political Science.
– 1985: Worked as a community organizer in Chicago.
– 1991: Graduated from Harvard Law School.
– 1992: Worked as a lawyer and university teacher in Chicago.
– 1996: Elected to the Illinois state Senate.
– 2004: Elected to the United States Senate for Illinois.
– 2007: Announced presidential candidacy.
– January – June 2008: Won the Democratic Party primaries, beating Hillary Clinton, among others.
– Nov 4, 2008: Won presidential election over Republican candidate John McCain with one of the strongest majorities in recent memory, 53 percent.
– Jan 20, 2009: To be inaugurated as the 44th president of the United States.
