Washington : The sea of humanity that swept Washington DC Tuesday for the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th US president may have been the largest gathering in the American capital so far.
Early estimates of the crowd that included many foreigners who had travelled specially for the occasion ranged from upward of a million to around two million.
The largest gathering before Tuesday’s inauguration was the one that turned up for Lyndon B. Johnson’s swearing-in ceremony in 1965. It was 1.2 million strong.
