Congress almost ready with manifesto for general election

By IANS,

New Delhi : Gearing up for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, the Congress Saturday almost finalised its election manifesto, with a focus on agriculture, financial reforms, youth and unemployment.

The manifesto committee of the party met in the capital to give a final shape to the policy paper, which has been sent to Congress president Sonia Gandhi for approval.

The next general election is expected in April or May.

“We had a meeting of Central Election Manifesto Committee. We have completed our job. The draft has been sent to the party president. She has to take a final decision on it,” External Affairs minister and head of the committee Pranab Mukerjee told reporters.

Congress general secretary Veerappa Moily, who is also a member of the committee, said they did an exhaustive exercise in preparing the draft.

“We met at least 10 times. The focus in this manifesto would be on different sectors like agriculture, fiscal reforms, achievements of the government, youth and unemployment,” Moily told reporters.

“We have travelled a long distance from 2004. Common man is and will always remain at the centre-stage,” Moily said. ‘Aam aadmi’, or common man, was the focus of the Congress campaign in the 2004 elections.
