Srinagar : Two suspected separatist guerrillas were killed in a gunfight that erupted during a search operation in a forest area in north Kashmir Saturday, the police said.
A police team, in a joint operation with the Indian Army, launched an operation on a specific information in the forest area of Shanagri near Handwara in Kupwara district, 80 km from here.
“While the searches were being conducted, hiding militants opened fire at the surrounding security forces. A gun battle started at the end of which two unidentified militants were killed,” a police officer said.
“Arms and ammunition have also been recovered,” the officer told IANS.
The gunfight comes two days ahead of the country’s Republic Day celebrations for which extraordinary security arrangements have been put in place in the state.
