Raipur : Chhattisgarh Home Minister Nankiram Kanwar made a surprise visit Wednesday at two Salwa Judum relief camps in restive Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh to review security arrangements.
Kanwar along with Additional Director General Girdhari Nayak, and Bijapur legislator Mahesh Gagra, visited the Bijapur and Gangloor relief camps in wake of reports that some of the camps have poor security arrangements.
“The surprise visit exercise was purely aimed at seeing whether enough security has been given to relief camps to guard from Maoist attacks,” Nayak said.
“we received some complaints from camp settlers about security and other issues and will be making arrangements,” he added.
Nayak said some 3,500 people are housed at the Bijapur camp while about 1,500 at the Gangloor camp.
About 50,000 tribal people of more than 700 forested villages in Bijapur and neighbouring Dantewada district are housed in 23 government-run camps since the launch of a controversial civil militia movement, Salwa Judum, in June 2005.
Maoist militants have carried out several attacks in recent years on Salwa Judum camps forcing the government to go in for heavy security arrangements to protect camp residents.
