Kolkata : A mentally challenged girl was injured Thursday after she was allegedly pushed off her wheelchair by a police officer near the Raj Bhavan when her 72-year-old father insisted on meeting Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi to seek medical assistance, Raj Bhavan sources said.
The girl, Tapati Dutta, fell from the wheelchair and sustained injuries on one of her arms, the girl’s father was quoted as saying.
Tapati’s father Arun Dutta alleged that a police officer pushed his daughter after he pleaded with the officer at the north gate of the Raj Bhavan to let them meet Gandhi as Tapati was not being admitted by any hospital. The police argued that they could not meet the governor without any prior appointment.
Later, the governor enquired about the incident and asked his personal physician to examine the girl, said a source at the Raj Bhavan.
Arun Dutta later submitted an application to the governor, seeking assistance for Tapati’s treatment. He also sent a petition to Kolkata Police Commissioner Goutam Mohan Chakraborty to see to it that Tapati was not harassed by locals near their Behala residence.
The Raj Bhavan arranged a car which took the father-daughter duo to their residence.
Assistant sub-inspector of police Goutam Nag, who was on duty at the gate at the time of the incident, was put under suspension. An inquiry has been initiated against him, said a top police officer.
