Sreedharan’s resignation evokes mixed reactions

New Delhi : As Delhi Metro chief E. Sreedharan stepped down owning moral responsibility for an accident Sunday, Delhiites appreciated his contribution in changing the profile of the capital while some wanted him to continue.

“He is the one who gifted us the Metro. He kept the safety of people in mind. He should be credited for this marvellous job,” 54-year-old housewife Usha Kaushal told IANS.

In the worst accident in the history of Delhi Metro, five people were killed and 15 injured when an elevated section of the tracks under construction came crashing down Sunday morning.

Sreedharan, though not directly responsible for the accident, owned the “moral responsibility” for it and stepped down as managing director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

“I think he has taken a right step by resigning because being the head of the DMRC, he should have been aware of the flaws but he was not and this cost many lives today,” said 21-year-old student Sourav Aggarwal.

Neha Bansal, a marketing executive, added: “It was his responsibility… it is not the first incident but quitting is not the solution of the problem. If they (DMRC authorities) were conscious about the issue (safety), the accident could have been averted.”

Leela Devi, a 45-year-old schoolteacher, was a little disappointed at the “Metro man’s” resignation.

“It is totally his decision. I have seen Delhi with and without the Metro and I think that he has contributed a lot in transforming Delhi and should be given a chance,” Devi said.
