36 policemen killed in attacks by Communists in Indias central state Chhattisgarh

New Delhi : As many as 36 police personnel were killed and many injured in Indias central state of Chhattisgarh in ambushes and landmine attacks by Communists group “Maoists”, media reports said Monday.

“Maoists” are a group of Communist extremists fighting for the cause of landless labourers in various Indian states, including Chhattisgarh.
The 36 policemen killed included a high-ranking official of the rank Superintendent of Police (SP). The attacks took place in three separate incidents in Rajnandgaon area of the state. This is being described as one of the worst Maoist attacks in the state. The attacks on the policemen began late on Sunday and continued till Monday morning.

The SP was killed when he was leading police reinforcements for an area where the Maoists had killed two policemen on Sunday morning, after being ambushed between Khoregaon and Karkoti village, said media reports. Meanwhile, one of the reports said that the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), a paramilitary force, has rushed 600 troops to the site of attacks. The troops are equipped with mine detection kits and rescue equipment. They would start combing operations in the area to collect the dead bodies of the dead cops.
