Rains leave two dead in Delhi

New Delhi : An eight-year-old girl drowned and a 36-year-old man was electrocuted to death when rains lashed the national capital Monday evening, officials said Tuesday.

Sapna’s body was found Tuesday when the water receded from her house in Devli, south Delhi.

According to officials, personnel of Delhi Fire Service were pressed into action around 12.15 a.m. following information that a house had been flooded with water after heavy rain.

“The girl was found unconscious in the house when we drained the water,” said an official of Delhi Fire Service.

She was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences where doctors pronounced her dead.

Nadeem, 36, was electrocuted to death in the Mori Gate of north Delhi when he came in contact with an electric pole late Monday. The electric pole also caught fire. Nadeem was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

In another rain related incident, seven shops were gutted in a fire in INA market in south Delhi due to a short circuit around 4.45 p.m. No one was injured in the accident.

Furthermore, in a separate incident three people suffered injuries when a wall collapsed due to the heavy downpour in Sangam Vihar.

Since Monday evening, Delhi has received a record 126 mm of rain causing endless traffic snarls and water logging.
