Chandigarh : All field officials of the Punjab Police are to get mobile telephones to improve their connectivity and response time.

The telephones will be given to all police officers and non-gazetted officers posted in the field, a police department spokesman said Friday.

Over 2,000 officers will get mobile connectivity in the first phase.

New Director General of Police P.S. Gill, who is behind the move to equip field officers with mobiles, has said that mobile phones, if properly used, can effectively aid in policing and investigation.

In the second phase, the police want to give mobile phones to all police officers of the intelligence wing and armed battalions. The Punjab Police is 70,000-strong.
