UN opens new camps for displaced Pakistanis

By Xinhua,

United Nations : The UN has opened three new camps to house the displaced Pakistanis fleeing the war in North West Frontier Province (NWFP), officials said.

The displaced Pakistanis continue to pour into the camps as their homes were ravaged in the conflict between the security forces and the Taliban, the UN office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Monday.

The lack of funds has hampered the UN’s relief efforts for displaced people, it said.

Most of the people who arrived at the camps recently are from the Lower Dir, Swat and the Buner regions of NWFP.

Pakistani authorities estimated that the number of displaced people exceeds 2.5 million, including 550,000 people, who fled the fighting last year in NWFP.

A UN appeal for $543 million to support the displaced people still remains largely unmet, as only about 25 percent of the funds have been received so far, it said.

Due to the shortfall, there are limited stocks of food and essential drugs which would deplete by the end of the month.
