Noida : A foundation backed by former US president Bill Clinton is in talks with the Gujarat and Rajasthan governments to build two 3,000 MW solar power plants, New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah said here Wednesday.
“We are looking at several initiatives to increase generation from renewable sources. For instance, the Clinton Foundation is planning two 3,000 MW solar power plants in Gujarat and Rajastan,” Abdullah said.
The Clinton Foundation of former president Bill Clinton, which is supported by corporate giants like GE Energy and Microsoft, is reported to have about $12 billion in its war chest to fund green energy initiatives.
Abdullah was in Noida to launch a solar-powered mobile handset manufactured by Samsung.
The cost of power generation could be 70 percent less than using conventional methods, said a ministry official at the launch function.
The world’s largest solar power plant is currently in Mojave desert in California with a capacity that will go up to 900 MW in a few years.
The foundation, which works with governments across the world to help reduce greenhouse emissions, is also in talks with the Andra Pradesh government for setting up a solar power project.
