Deoband: Some of the leading Ulema of Deoband have shown their opposition to 33 per cent Women’s Reservation Bill that has again gained momentum due to the elevation of Ms. Meira Kumar as the first woman speaker of Lok Sabha in the history of independent India.
This issue has ruffled many a feathers in not only in the political circles but also in the realms of religion. Many Ulema are from the world renowned Islamic seminary of Darul Uloom have opposed the bill.
According to Sadrul Mudrasssin and Nazim-e-Ta’leemat of Darul Uloom Deoband (Wakf) Maulana Aslam Qasmi, one of the most imminent dangers of the proposed Bill is that it will reduce Muslim representation.
Elaborating his point Maulana Salim Qasmi said that if the reservation is general then there are possibilities that Muslim representation and especially the women representation will reduce because Muslim women will not be able to take part in the elections.
The Chief Editor of Tarjuman-i-Deoband Monthly Maulana Nadeemul Wajidi feels that this Bill will serve no purpose of uplifting the women. If as a result of reservation a huge number of women would come into political arena then it will be a sort of social disaster. Another relevant point made by Maulana Nadeemul Wajidi was that in a Muslim concentration area wherefrom the victory for a Muslim candidate is sure is being effectively nullified by making it reserve for women.
President of All India Tanzeem Ulema-e-Hind Maulana Ahmad Khizar Shah Masoodi has rejected the Bill too. He describes that our age old culture does not permit women venture freely out of the household.
Founder of Markaz Nawa-i-Qalam Maulana Naseem Akhter Shah Qaisar said that wherever is the provision for the reservation of women there are instances of injustice, unfairness, discrimination and partiality. It so happens because due to reservation the right and deserving candidate is left out whereas an incompetent person is appointed in his/her place that serves no purpose at all.
“The precise reason for this Bill to be under consideration is that even the parties who are campaigning for this are themselves not clear about it. They are unable to reach the consensus regarding the shape and size of the proposed Reservation Bill” said Mr.Naseem Akhter.
