New Delhi : Over 113,000 forms were submitted – more than double the number of seats in Delhi University colleges – for various graduate and post-graduate courses, varsity officials said Monday, the last day of form submissions.
“In total some 115,000 forms were sold, of which 113,471 forms were submitted by the students this year. This is much higher than last year when we received 93,000 forms,” Dean of Students Welfare S.K. Vij said.
A total of 115,149 forms were sold at the 16 centres spread across the Delhi University campus. This figure is more than double the number of seats the university has on offer for its various graduate and post-graduate courses.
“While only 49,000 seats are offered by the university, the response of the students has been great. The seats have also been increased from the 42,000 last year,” Vij said.
The additional 7,000 seats were added across all undergraduate courses, Vij said.
The sale and receipt of forms for admissions to 47 courses and 63 colleges was open for 15 days till Monday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. However, to accommodate the last day’s rush, officials kept the centres open till 4 p.m.
The streets of the varsity’s campuses in the north and the south of the capital for the past fortnight were dotted with enthusiastic varsity aspirants and their parents. On the last day, however, many grew wary about their chances.
“I heard the number of forms submitted across the board was double. I still think I can make it. If not…then I will be forced to look at private institutions,” said Hrishita Makkar, who wants to pursue psychology honours and secured 82 percent in her board exams.
Sahil Malhotra, who wants to get into a BCom course at the varsity, was worried about the competition but was “prepared”.
“I always wanted to do B.Com from DU. But since I got only 72 percent in my boards, it’s possible that I won’t make it. So I have a backup plan – Indraprastha University where I am applying for BBA or BCA,” Malhotra told IANS.
The submitted forms will now be scrutinized for different colleges and the first cut-off list will be announced June 25.
