Ghaziabad : A 23-year-old married woman jumped to death from the third floor of a mall on the Delhi-Ghaziabad border Wednesday afternoon, police said, suspecting it to be a “case of dowry-harassment” by her in-laws driving her to commit suicide.
Saraswati had gone to the East Delhi Mall (EDM) in Kaushambi Towers with her husband Dhirendra Kumar, a property dealer of Bhovapur locality in Ghaziabad.
After taking refreshments, Kumar asked his wife to wait at the mall while he got CNG filled in his car from Delhi. When Kumar returned and was going up to the third floor, he saw his wife leaning against the grill. She smiled at Kumar and then suddenly jumped from the third floor, police said.
Kumar rushed her to a hospital where the doctors declared her dead, police said.
Saraswati, a state level athlete, was married to Kumar since Feb 16, 2008.
Saraswati’s parents have alleged that her in-laws and husband used to harass her for dowry.
“We gave everything they demanded, including a Rs.11 lakh Hyundai Verna car. We organised marriage to the best of our potential. But then, they asked for more dowry and harassed my daughter,” her father said.
“Though we complained many times about this to the boy’s parents, maternal uncle and other relatives, no one listened to us. And now, they have done this to her,” the father told the police.
Superintendent of Police Rahul Yaduvendu said, “Prima facie, it appears to be a case of dowry-harassment and abetment to suicide.”
“We are looking into more facts in the case. The woman’s father has complained that she was harassed by her mother-in-law and husband for dowry. We have detained the girl’s husband for now,” Yaduvendu said.
Station Officer Jitendra Kalra said the police are investigating the case and “looking at all possible angles.”
