Sydney : In a fresh attack, two Indian students were assaulted with a beer bottle in Sydney. Two teenagers have been arrested for the attack.
“Two Indian students have been assaulted in Sydney’s C-B-D overnight, with one man suffering cuts to his face after being hit with a beer bottle,” ABC News reported.
There has been a string of attacks on Indian students since May 9. Sunday’s incident takes the number of such victims to 18.
Two juveniles have been charged for assaulting the two Indians with a glass bottle, New South Wales Police Force media statement said.
According to the release, the police were called in at about 4 a.m. after reports of an argument, which had escalated into a fight involving the four.
The two men were “each struck to the head with a glass beer bottle”.
The men, both aged 20, were taken to Sydney Hospital where they were treated for bruising and minor lacerations, before being discharged.
The arrested teenagers – a 16-year-old from Peakhurst and 17-year-old from Hurstville – were both charged with two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm.
Nearly 90,000 Indian students are studying in various Australian education institutions.
A series of attacks and robberies on Indian students had been highlighted prominently in the Indian media, which had led to statements of assurance on safety from the highest level of the Australian government.
India has released guidelines for Indian students to ensure that they had a safe stay.
