Mumbai: In a significant turn in the probe of Malegaon 2006 blasts, the special MCOCA court has sanctioned the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to question Lt. Col. Shrikant Prasad Purohit who has already been charge sheeted in the Malegaon 2008 blasts case.

It was on Shab-e-Barat on September 8, 2006 that at least 37 persons were killed, most of them Muslims, and 125 injured in serial blasts at Mushawarat Chowk and Bada Qabarstan in Malegaon.

A 34-member delegation comprising various political and non-political organizations of Malegaon had met Maharashtra Home Minister Jayant Patil and ATS Chief Raghuvanshi on February 4 demanding a re-probe in the Malegaon 2006 blasts case. The delegation told them that Malegaon people strongly felt that the arrested Muslim youths were innocent.

The ATS had arrested nine alleged members of SIMI in this connection. Later the investigation was handed over to CBI on demand of local people. The demand had intensified after the appearance of Hindu terror faces in the Malegaon September 29, 2008 blasts.
