Dhaka : Two people accused of inciting the Feb 25-26 Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) mutiny, including Touhidul Alam, a deputy assistant director (DAD) of the paramilitary frontier force, have been arrested even as the government began probes at different levels Tuesday.
The para-military force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) also arrested BDR member Abdur Rahim, said Colonel Reza-Nur Rahman, additional director general of RAB.
While police have filed a case accusing over 1,000 people of having ties to the bloodshed at the BDR headquarters, only six among them were named.
Apart from Alam and Rahim, the others identified accused are DAD Nasiruddin Khan, DAD Mirza Habibur Rahman, DAD Abdul Jalil and sepoy M.D. Selim.
In a poignant reminder of last week’s mayhem, Colonel Zakir Hossain, one of the Bangladesh Army’s slain officers was promoted posthumously to the rank of brigadier general.
His name was announced as Brig Gen Zakir Hossain during the namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayer) of 50 people, including 48 army officers, at the National Parade Ground Sunday.
Star Online, quoting official sources said all formalities for his promotion had been completed before he was brutally killed in the mutiny by troopers of the BDR Feb 25-26.
Meanwhile, the Army Inquiry Committee headed by Quartermaster General Lt Gen Jahangir Alam Chowdhury Tuesday paid its first visit to the BDR headquarters at Pilkhana, the venue of the mutiny on the outskirts of the national capital.
Accompanied by several other army officers, Chowdhury visited all the places of occurrences – PO in military parlance – inside the campus where troopers revolted on the issue of better pay and working conditions and killed over a hundred of their officers.
At the police level, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is also carrying out its investigation after the government formed the 60-member committee headed by Senior Assistant Superintendent of the CID Police Abdul Kahar Akand.
An inquiry at the third level that also began its work Tuesday is being headed by former secretary Anisuzzaman Khan and held its first meeting at the home ministry.
“I’m hopeful of submitting the report within the given seven days’ time,” Khan told the media.
