Dhaka : The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has “agreed to help” Bangladesh in carrying out forensic investigations into the Bangladesh Rifles troopers’ mutiny, a media report said.
Acting Deputy State Department spokesman Gordon Duguid told a press briefing in Washington Tuesday that he believed that the FBI would agree to help Bangladesh in investigating the BDR revolt, The Daily Star reported Wednesday.
Duguid said that they have received a request from the Bangladesh government for FBI help in forensic investigation into the mutiny.
“I believe the FBI has agreed to do that,” the report quoted Duguid as saying.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had sought help from the FBI to look into the uprising by the border guards.
She sought assistance of the FBI in the investigation to dig out real culprits and mete out appropriate punishment to them.
The mutiny broke out Feb 25 morning when the rebellious men took control of their headquarter. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina offered general amnesty to them, but the troopers were defiant.
The government held talks with a delegation of the mutineers Thursday and an agreement was reached. By then the mutiny had spread to other BDR camps all over the country.
The revolt ended Feb 26 in the face of an imminent attack by the Bangladesh Army.
