New Delhi : A court Wednesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment on charges of killing his 19-year-old wife within two months of marriage after she failed to bring a motorcycle as dowry.
Additional Sessions Judge Narottam Kaushal also awarded a seven-year jail term to the father-in-law of the victim, Puran Singh, for his complicity in the crime.
Sadhna, who was married to Har Narain, was found dead in 2006 at their house in Uttam Nagar in west Delhi.
“The husband of the deceased deserves stringent sentence as the demand for motorcycle was made on his behalf,” the judge said.
“A woman enters the matrimonial home with implicit confidence and expectation of protection from her husband. If Har Narain, instead of providing protection, subjects her to cruelty, he betrays the faith as well as violates the law,” the judge said.
The court also fined Har Narain and Puran Singh Rs.5,000 each after holding them guilty under the Indian Penal Code.
