Srinagar still tense, security tightened

BY IANS,
Srinagar : Security was tightened and the old city area of Srinagar remained tense Saturday, a day after a man was killed in clashes between protestors and the police, officials said.

Authorities ordered heavy deployment of police and the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Nowhatta, Gojwara, Rajouri Kadal, Safa Kadal, Bohri Kadal, Naid Kadal and other areas to prevent further clashes.

Residents said the security forces had imposed restrictions on the movement of people and traffic in these areas.

Shahid Ahmad Ahangar had died in firing by the security forces after an agitated mob, protesting the government’s “interference” in religious rights of the people and the conditions of detenues in the state’s prisons, threw stones at the police in the Nowhatta area after Friday prayers.

Another protestor, identified as Shabir Ahmad Baba, was critically wounded in the clashes.

Educational institutions, shops and other business establishments also remained closed in the affected areas of the city Saturday.

In the uptown areas of the city, however, life was comparatively normal even though not much traffic was seen on the roads in the morning.

“These are just precautions to prevent miscreants from creating an ugly situation. Despite restrictions, students taking the Class 10 and 12 exams would be allowed to appear and their movement to examination centres would be facilitated by us,” a police officer said here.
