Bedlam in Jammu and Kashmir assembly over civilian killing

By IANS,

Jammu : Protests erupted in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly Saturday over the killing of a civilian in firing by security forces in Srinagar a day earlier.

Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone adjourned the house for half hour after opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members gathered near his chair and raised slogans against the government.

They blamed the government for its alleged inability to check civilian killings and human rights violations.

One man was killed Friday when security forces fired at a mob protesting the government’s alleged interference in religious affairs and the conditions in prisons.

The demonstrators stoned the police. About two dozen people were injured in the clashes.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Abdul Rahim Rather assured the house that action would be taken against the guilty.

The minister said that the government was also studying an inquiry report into Feb 21 incident in the Kashmir Valley in which two civilians were killed in alleged firing by the Indian Army.

The army attributed the killings to crossfire.
