Women just 7.53 percent of central government work force: Official

New Delhi, March 8 (IANS) Women constitute just 7.52 percent of the central government work force, revealed T.K.A. Nair, the principal secretary to the prime minister, Sunday.

“The percentage of women working in the central government is 7.53 percent, of which 24 percent are in All India Civil Services, 18.5 percent in the Indian Police Service and 18 percent in the Indian Foreign Service, Nair said.

Nair was speaking on the launch of the special International Women’s Day issue of Bureacracy Today magazine here.

He expressed concern over the low figures of women in the central government.

“We are a functioning democracy and the role of bureaucracy is going to change and the present scenario of women in public administration must improve,” he said.

“Role of women in bureaucracy, particularly at higher levels, is just a small part of the story. We have several other women working actively outside the bureaucratic circles who directly or indirectly are involved in supporting the system but we need more encouragement to motivate the upcoming generation to come and join government services,” he added.

Secretary for ministry of development for northeastern states Veena S. Rao said: “Women are born administrators. While on one hand there is a feeling of acceptance of women in power on the other hand there are some areas where discrimination is visible.”
