Singapore to host 15th anti-smoking global summit

Mumbai : Singapore will host the 15th “World Conference on Tobacco or Health” in 2012, it was announced here Thursday at the closing ceremony of the 14th anti-smoking summit.

More than 2,000 delegates from around the world attended the conference in Mumbai.

The 14th conference, one of the largest meet of anti-tobacco advocates, health experts, scientists and educators, ended with certain declarations.

The conference pointed out that all tobacco products create an economic burden, especially in low income countries. The global tobacco control community needs to increase efforts to combat this epidemic, it said.

It said 80 percent countries in the world should raise tobacco taxes to over 60 percent of the retail price by 2012.

The declaration said the tobacco industry obstructs effective anti-smoking measures and promotes tobacco products through all possible means, including the entertainment industry. It should be curbed effectively, read the declaration.

It also recommended that by 2012 the United Nations should convene a general session on tobacco control.
