Hyderabad : The Election Commission may take a decision Sunday on the Andhra Pradesh opposition parties’ complaint against the state police chief, who allegedly violated the model code of conduct by praising the Congress government.
The commission was yet to go through the complaint against Director General of Police (DGP) S.S.P. Yadav, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N. Gopalaswami told a news conference here Friday evening.
“We are reaching Delhi tomorrow and, may be, we will take a decision day after tomorrow,” he said.
Gopalaswami, who along with Election Commissioners Navin Chawla and S.Y. Qureshi reviewed the preparations here for the next month’s elections, said the commission was yet to go into the details of the complaint against the DGP.
“There is also a CD which we have not seen. We have called for some other records, which are now available with us. We have to study them before we take a decision,” he said.
While addressing a press conference in Kurnool last week, the DGP had praised the Congress government and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for recruiting over 37,000 police personnel.
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and other opposition parties have demanded action against the DGP. They have also called for replacing state Chief Secretary Ramakanth Reddy on the ground that his name was linked to a corruption scandal.
Winding up a two-day visit, the CEC expressed satisfaction over the arrangements being made for simultaneous polls to the state assembly and the Lok Sabha, scheduled to be held April 16 and 23.
Gopalaswami said the services of the anganwadi workers and Vidya volunteers would be used for the poll duty to overcome the shortage of workforce.
“Earlier we had the general instructions not to use the services of these people but in view of the situation in Andhra Pradesh, we have decided to relax it,” he said.
On the populist promises being made by various political parties, he said the commission would take a view after examining the matter.
Citing few articles of the constitution, Jayprakash Narayan of the NGO Lok Satta, has urged the commission to declare such promises unlawful.
