Gandhinagar : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has turned its poll campaign spotlight on a cluster of 67 villages in Sanand in Gujarat – the project site of the world’s cheapest car Nano being manufactured by the Tata Group – and now part of BJP prime ministerial candidate L.K. Advani’s Lok Sabha constituency.
After delimitation, the villages, including Chharodi village – 15 km from state capital Gandhinagar – have come under the Gandhinagar constituency from where Advani is contesting for the fifth time. He won four consecutive terms from the Gandhinagar seat.
State-level BJP leaders have drawn up campaign programmes for Advani in Sanand area. The party is projecting bringing the small car project from Singur in West Bengal to Gujarat as a major achievement of the BJP government.
A party MP told IANS that specific instructions have been given to workers to focus on publicising the benefits of having the small car project among the farmers as the Tata Group has already expressed its willingness to adopt villages for development near its small car factory.
The village level party workers have been asked to take up door-to-door campaigning to introduce Advani as their Lok Sabha candidate as many villagers only identify with Chief Minister Narendra Modi, he added.
“Advani-ji is expected to hold a series of public meetings in the villages of Sanand area once he starts touring the constituency after filing nomination later this month,” he said.
After Chharodi village was selected as the site for the Nano plant in October 2008, the state government started inviting tenders to develop the roads in the vicinity. Work on the roads and erecting electricity poles has stopped after the announcement of the model code of conduct for the polls.
