Maha govt. orders probe of Nanded riots

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Arif Naseem Khan on Sunday issued an order to conduct an investigation into the Nanded riots and act tough against the guilty police officers.

He said that SP Yadav (IPS), IG Nanded range, has been assigned the duty to visit the riots-hit areas and investigate the police role.

On March 13 there erupted a communal clash during the Shiv Jayanti juloos when the controversial CD ‘Mandir Wahin Banayenge.’ (We Will build the temple there {Ayodheya}) was being played in front of Masjid Aabideen of Nanded. The police allegedly conducted one-sided arresting and arrested 31 Muslims and 5 others from the majority community.

According to a press release a delegation of Jamiat Ulama Maharashtra led by the state general secretary Hafiz Nadeem met IG Yadav and apprised him of the prevailing tense situation there.

They also told, ‘The disturbance instigated by the CD was over as the peace-loving people from both the sides had resolved the issue. But at 1 am when the police started intruding the Muslim houses and arresting them the rioters found opportunity and they started doing their work.’

Mr. Naseem Khan while expressing his concern over the biased attitude of the police said that the riots were the result of the police negligence. ‘They were asked to arrange tight security at mosques and other religious places ahead of Eid-e-Milad Un Nabi and Shiv Jayanti but they did not take care.’

Meanwhile Maulana Arshad Madani, the president of Jamiat Ulama met Naseem Khan and demanded the suspension of the guilty senior police officers and the release of innocent Muslim youths.

It is said that the police administration had assured the Muslims on Saturday to release the arrested Muslims but so far it did not do and instead they have been charged under different articles of IPC.
