Panaji : Congress legislators in Goa Tuesday took their own party-led coalition government to task over the rampant sale of drugs in the state.
Congress legislator from Calangute, Agnelo Fernandes, said there were increasing instances of drug related crimes in the state. “There is a group of Nigerians which is controlling the drug market in Goa,” Fernandes said.
Fernandes said that Goa’s most popular coastal destination Calangute was infested by drug peddlers and in the grip of the mafia.
“There is one Michael Okoro from Nigeria against whom there is absolutely no action being taken,” Fernandes said, adding that the police had not acted satisfactorily against Okoro, who was accused of assaulting a police official.
Congress legislator from Aldona Dayanand Narvekar said that it took a team of sleuths attached to the anti-narcotics wings of Mumbai Police to arrest an international drug peddler, William David alias Dudu, a resident of Israel.
“When Dudu was arrested in Goa, he was booked only under a preventive section. This is unbelievable. Are the police really taking the drugs scenario in Goa seriously?” Narvekar asked.
Narvekar also accused the Goa police of acting in a lax manner in criminal cases related to drugs.
“Why have the Goa police not sought a confessional statement of Tukaram Salgaonkar (a Goan) who was arrested by the Mumbai police for his role in a major drug racket, which also involves Goa?” he asked.
