Panaji : More than 10 days after a German national, whose tip-off led to the arrest of a Polish hit man this month, complained of harassment and threats by local politicians, the Goa police have failed to register his complaint, an official of the German consulate said Thurdsay.
Kalenborn Heinz Willi, a German national who resides in the coastal village of Chopdem, 25 km from here, had on March 14 enabled the arrest of an alleged contract killer who had sought refuge in Goa.
In a complaint submitted to the Pernem police on March 16, Willi had said that local politicians and goons from Chopdem, including the local sarpanch (village head) Amol Raul and his deputy, were threatening to physically harm him and his wife Anita, if he did not leave his house and the village immediately.
Girish Raikar, an official at the German consulate in Goa, said that the failure of the police to act on Willi’s complaint despite the help rendered by Willi in the arrest of a potentially dangerous person wanted internationally was “baffling”.
“It’s been 10 days and the police have still not filed a First Information Report (FIR),” Raikar said, alleging the local politicians were eyeing the plot on which Willi’s house stands.
“It looks like the sarpanch wants him to move out of the house for reasons other than the alleged ‘harbouring’ which he has been accusing Willi of,” he added.
Raikar also expressed shock at the Pernem police not doing anything for someone who had risked his life by playing host to the alleged contract killer Adam Pyotr Mancic, just so that the authorities could arrest him.
“It is certified that Heinz Willi Kalenborn and his wife Anita had been requested by the undersigned to allow Adam Mancic, subject of an international search and arrest warrant, to stay at their residence, so that the Goa police and Interpol, New Delhi got the opportunity to arrest him,” reads a letter of appreciation written by Thomas Lubnau, a police liaison officer at the German embassy in New Delhi.
Speaking to IANS, inspector at the Pernem police station Uttam Raut Dessai confirmed that no FIR had been filed. “We have not registered the crime. But we have taken assurances from both the sarpanch and others in the village to ensure that there is no breach of peace,” Dessai said.
