Amsterdam : The car driver who killed five people when he sped into a crowd watching the Dutch monarch, Queen Beatrix, in an apparent attack on the royal family has died of his injuries, the public prosecutor confirmed Friday.
Thursday’s attack – which has stunned the Netherlands – was captured on film, which showed the small black car burst through a barrier at high speed, hitting 17 people, and killing three men and two women.
The driver of the car, named only as Kars T., died overnight from internal bleeding in a local hospital, the prosecutor said, confirming earlier TV reports.
The surviving twelve bystanders hit by his car were left seriously injured.
The 38-year-old Dutch national confirmed to police before he died that he intended to attack the royal family.
Media reports described the man as an unemployed loner. He was said to have come from the small town of Huissen, south of Arnheim.
Police investigators, who have searched the car and his home, believe he acted alone. A special commission is to investigate his motives and examine the security precautions around the royal family.
Thursday was a national public holiday in the Netherlands, and the 71-year-old Queen Beatrix, accompanied by other royals, was travelling through the town of Apeldoorn, 90 km east of Amsterdam, in an open top bus when the attack occurred.
