Hyderabad : An Indian policeman-turned-terror suspect who allegedly participated in fighting in Iraq and Chechnya has been arrested by police here.
Mohammed Nisar, an alleged agent of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), was Saturday produced before a city court, which sent him to judicial custody for two weeks.
The sleuths of counter-intelligence cell are believed to have picked up Nisar in Zaheerabad town in Medak district, about 100 km from here.
During the interrogation, the terror suspect told police that he underwent arms training in Pakistan and fought Russian forces in Chechnya and the US Army in Iraq, according to sources.
Police believe that Nisar came back to Hyderabad a month ago but kept changing his hideouts in and around the city. His return to the city after nearly eight years raised doubts if the terrorists were planning new attacks in the city.
Nisar, who is said to be a member of Pakistan-based terror outfit, the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), had earlier worked as a constable in the City Armed Reserve while his father Abu Bakar served as an inspector.
Nisar, who left the police job in 2001, is suspected to be involved in the bomb blast at a temple and a conspiracy to trigger blasts during Ganesh procession. He reportedly came in contact with a suspected ISI agent Abdul Aziz. Police claimed the duo underwent training in Pakistan and also fought in Chechnya and Iraq.
He is also said to be a friend of Vikaruddin, another terror suspect who fled after opening fire on two policemen in December last year.
Nisar’s arrest came two days after a city court sentenced a Pakistani national to life imprisonment. Malik Arshad Mahmood was arrested in 2004 while sending defence secrets to his handlers in ISI.
